Utterance Of Un-Naming

Legends speak of syllables of truespeech of such destructive power they can utterly erase others from existence. Called un-naming, this force completely obliterates objects and creatures by deleting their truename from the universe, a fate worse than death. More so than any other utterance, those who learn the art of un-naming lose their old selves. Existence strains to support the utterance of un-naming, beings so suffused with entropic power they barely exist themselves. They are unrecognizable even to those who knew them, their only defining feature a long, black tongue with which to speak the dread words of un-naming. Their forms are otherwise blurred beyond all definition by the destructive power of truespeech, with a chaotic, amnesiac mind to match. Utterances of unnaming speak little—save for their truespeech incantations—and when they do, it comes out in a grim tone with broken grammar.

TRAITS

Powerful Words. Spells and magical effects cannot prevent the utterance from speaking. Additionally, its words can always be heard and understood by those within earshot (even deafened creatures).

Reactive. The utterance has two reactions.

Words of Entropy. At the start of each of the utterance’s turns it can choose to immediately end a single effect or spell it can see with a duration greater than instantaneous.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The utterance uses Truename Research or Subjugate, then uses Truename Disruption twice against two different targets.

Subjugate. The utterance commands a creature who can hear it to follow a course of activity (limited to one sentence) and force it to make a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature must follow the command, taking all actions and spending movement necessary to best fulfill its terms. This effect lasts for 1 minute or until the target fulfills the command, whichever comes first. If an affected target takes damage it can immediately attempt a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw, ending the effect on a success.

Terminate. The utterance deletes the truename of a creature it can see whose truename it knows. At the end of the target’s next turn, it dies and its body disappears into nothingness. The target cannot be restored to life without its truename, or until a new truename is given to it.

Truename Disruption. Ranged Spell Attack: +12 to hit, range 120 ft., one creature. Hit: 30 (4d10 + 8) psychic damage plus 22 (4d10) slashing damage.

Truename Research. The utterance attempts to discern the truename of a creature it can see within 120 feet by making a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by the target’s Charisma (Deception) check. On a success, the utterance learns a fragment of the target’s truename. While the utterance knows this fragment, it has advantage on all attacks, ability checks, and saving throws against the target.

Additionally, if the target is incapacitated, the utterance can spend the next hour engaged in strenuous activity to discern the target’s full truename.

REACTIONS

Censure. As a reaction when a creature that can hear the utterance within 120 feet takes a reaction or bonus action, it can force that creature instead take no action.

Rebuke. As a reaction when a creature that can hear the utterance moves within 15 feet of it, the utterance can force the creature to succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or take 22 (4d10) psychic damage and be magically teleported to an unoccupied space the utterance can see within 60 feet.
